A wild dog kill
After leaving the lodge in the early morning the sun broke through the clouds and we greeted the day with a beautiful sunrise. Not long after that we found some wild dog tracks that led us to the airstrip. And there they were: four wild dogs running around playfully! They chased zebra around without success and decided to rather concentrate on impala. The four of them made an impressive hunting formation and the impala did not stand a chance. They devoured the kill in a matter of minutes and soon after disappeared into the thick bush. If we left the lodge minutes later we would have been unaware of their presence, except for their tracks left behind in the sand...

The leopard and the frog
We found Mbilo while she was trying to hunt. She chased around birds and a scrub hare, but had no luck. We thought that she gave up when she walked over to a Weeping Wattle Tree. Then something truly amazing happened: she jumped high into the air and caught a frog while it was leaping from the tree! Her timing was perfect and she quickly finished off the snack. Afterwards she cleaned herself and fell asleep in the shade of the tree.
Two hundred thirsty buffalo
We drove to Big Dam to watch the hippos and found four buffalo bulls drinking water. At first we thought that it was a bachelor herd. When a big, black mass broke through the tree line, going straight for the water, we realised that is was indeed the big breeding herd of about 200 buffalo. We watched as the buffalo formed a semi circle around the dam, looking for a spot to quench their thirst and taking turns in doing so. You could almost see the water level dropping. What an amazing sighting! |
