Lions

These are some of the lions you might encounter while on safari at Elephant Plains.

Back to the Big Five
We have regular sightings of three lion prides and two male coalitions in our area of traversing. The average territory of the prides ranges around 20 km˛.

The different prides crisscross each other's territories and each pride also has a core territory situated in the centre of their respective territories. The pride will always return to the core territory after patrolling and hunting on the outskirts. The core is the safest part of the territory and it is in this part that the lionesses will give birth to the cubs. The mortality rate of the cubs is very high; 1 in 4 female and 1 in 10 male cubs will survive the first two years.  A brief outline of the different prides:

Mapogo Males

This group consists of six males which have taken over the whole southern sector of the Sabi Sand Wildtuin. They dominate prides in Mala Mala, Londolozi and Robson’s properties and are still increasing their territory. They have killed an estimated 45 lions and cubs. They have mated with females from five of the prides that also move around our traversing area. The Mapogo’s have recently split their original collusion. Three stay in the south, one in the west and Mr. T and Kinky Tail predominantly stay in our traversing area. Mapogo means bully. They normally predate on rhinos, buffalo & hippopotamus.

Kuhuma Pride

They sometimes come from the east into Safari lodge, Simbambili and Little Gowrie. The pride consists of five females and four cubs. They normally predate on buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest & kudu.

Stix Pride

This pride’s core territory is Mala Mala, from where they also move into Little Gowrie, Hoffman’s, Arathusa Private Lodge and Safari Lodge. The pride consists of five females. They had nine cubs in the past year, but now only have four left. They normally predate on giraffe, zebra, wildebeest & kudu.

Tsalala Pride

This pride consists of three females; the mother who has no tail and her two daughters who are now estimated at around seven years old. B.B. the tailless mom had two cubs that are now about six months old. The two daughters had six cubs of about eight months old. They move around Arathusa Private Lodge, Safari Lodge, Simbambili and Elephant Plains. They normally predate on giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, kudu & impala.

Sandypatch Female

This is a single female that moves around Safari Lodge and Hoffman’s. She has a male cub estimated at around nine months. She normally predates on zebra, wildebeest & kudu.

Young Robson Males

These stunning males are estimated at around eight years old and recently moved east into Kruger Park. The one male only has one eye and the other has a short tail. They normally predate on zebra, wildebeest & kudu.

Ottowa Pride

This pride consists of two adult females and six cubs, estimated at around three years old. We recently received news that the pride has about seven new cubs. They move from our western boundary into Simbambili, Arathusa Private Lodge and Elephant Plains. The pride normally predates on zebra, wildebeest & kudu.

Windmill Pride

This pride mainly moves around Djuma and Nkorho and into the Kruger Park. This pride consists of three young males of about three years old, as well as seven females. The pride normally predates on buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest & kudu.
