These
are some of the lions you might encounter while
on safari at
Elephant Plains.
(BACK TO
THE BIG FIVE)
Mapogo’s:
Of the original six only three remain, having been
displaced by a new coalition of 4 younger and stronger
males. The remaining Mapogo’s keep mostly to the western
sector of the reserve.
Stix pride:
This pride’s core territory is Mala Mala, from where
they also move into Little Gowrie, Hoffman’s, Arathusa
Private Lodge and Safari Lodge. The pride consists
of five females. They had nine cubs in the past year,
but unfortunately, only two female cubs survived.
Tsalala Pride:
This pride consists of three females – the mother, who
has no tail, and her two daughters who are now seven
years old. BB (short for Boerboel, a big dog without a
tail) has two cubs that are about 20 months old. The two
daughters also have six cubs that are twenty two months
old. We recently saw them with four newborn cubs.
Majingilane males:
They are the new kids on the block! These males
overthrew the Mapogo’s and now reign in our area. They
dominate the whole of the northern Sabi Sand, as well as
a few kilometres south of the Sand River. They have been
responsible for a number of deaths amongst lions in the
other prides, most noticeably Kinky Tail from the
Mapogo’s and four of the Tsalala cubs. They have mated
with most of the females in the area.
